Suntory Hall opened in 1986 as the first concert hall in Tokyo dedicated for live orchestral concerts and recitals. This hall was built and designed by drinks company Suntory. The Austrian-made huge pipe organ is the most striking visual feature of the Main hall. The acoustics are extraordinary superb; Herbert von Karajan described the place as 'truly a jewel box of sound'.

It was the first concert hall in Japan to be built using the vineyard design, in which the seating surrounds the stage rising up in serried rows eagerly advocated by a legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan.
