Young British Artists from TATE Collection @The National Art Center Tokyo

An exhibition of YBA (Young British Artists) works from the collection of the Tate Gallery. The show focuses mainly on works produced in the 1990s, and even now they remain remarkably provocative and stimulating. Damien Hirst, who went on to become one of the leading figures in contemporary British art, was still an up-and-coming young artist in the early 1990s. I still remember the shock I felt when I saw Hirst's sheep preserved in formaldehyde in a tank, exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in 1994 -- it made me question what conceptual art really was. However, I was surprised to find a triptych by Francis Bacon as the very first work in the exhibition, given that he was not a member of the YBAs.
