The location of this flat is called Tsukiji where is a very unique area in Tokyo. There is the Tsukiji Enclave for Foreign Residents. In Tokyo, the opening to foreign residents took effect during the first year of new Meiji government on November 19, 1968, and the enclave was located in the Tsukiji district where this flat is situated, now called Akashicho. Unlike the foreign enclaves in Yokohama and Kobe where trading houses were predominant, the Tsukiji Enclave contained the legations and consulates of the foreign nations to the Japanese capital and became home to missionaries, physicians, teachers and other professionals, and many churches and schools were opened. With its a character as a zone of culture and education, the Tsukiji Enclave exerted a strong influence on the modernization of Japan until 1899, when the enclaves for foreign residents were abolished after revision of the treaties.
